Ohime Mag, the 12-year-old trotter under the guidance of one of its owners, Ronald Cassar, won the major event on the card during the sixth meeting of the season at Marsa yesterday.

Ohime Mag was first in the Premier Class race, held over a short distance of 2,140 metres.

The card consisted of 11 all-trotting races with Charles Camilleri finishing as the best driver of the afternoon with three wins.

Thirteen horses lined up for the Premier race. Swedish newcomer Chiara Sisu (Melvin Farrugia) was the fastest in the early stages, opening a length’s lead from Ohime Mag and Vanmaker Limburgia (Rodney Gatt).

Chiara Sisu was unchallenged for most of the distance but with some 400m, to go the mare ran out of steam and in came Ohime Mag to seal its first win of the season.

Vanmaker Limburgia was second ahead of Orgueil De Nganda (Noel Baldacchino) and Livi Cantona (Julian Farrugia).

Six races yesterday heralded the start of the Assikura Cham-pionship for Bronze Class horses. From these heats, 24 qualified for the semi-final stage.

Kaki De Peyrahout (Charles Farrugia) lived up to its billing as favourite in the opening heat and in the next Bronze race, Queops De Retz (Emmanuel Fenech) dashed strongly from the outside for its first win of the year.

Schejken Bill (Charles Farrugia) had to go all the way in the last few metres of the third heat to stave off the challenge of Sjohultets Tigra (Rodney Gatt) and Napolitano Sun (David Ellul).

Obscur De Busset (Shawn Portelli) led all the way and triumphed by more than two lengths from Qumran De La Motte (Frenċu Cassar) as Julian Port (Rodney Gatt) also led from start to finish in the fifth heat.

Zeta Jones A (Charles Camilleri) seized the lead from Quingen De Bussy (Brian Hili) midway through the final straight to make sure of a berth in the next stage of the championship.

Another meeting at the Marsa Racetrack will be held on Sunday afternoon.
