Pre-election, the Maltese supremo for energy was one of the stars of Joseph Muscat’s team.

He told us all was planned and ready to be implemented: what usually takes long to accomplish he was going to do super-fast.

Obviously, for someone as intelligent, as perspicacious and savvy as Dr Muscat to have entrusted his whole political future and credibility to his workings and plans, this Konrad Mizzi must be a wizard, a wonder-kid of stratospheric dimensions.

All fair and dandy to promise the big cuts he worked out so diligently while in opposition. However, this same Minister has now admitted that when it comes to oil procurement he and the Government are still in their learning curve.

That is quite an admission for a member of a government which had so many roadmaps we, observers all, thought that Google-Maps was in for some tough competition. But it was nice of him.

So hurrah to our Energy Minister—that is the way to be. If you know not, say so. Do not plod on making yourself out to be a superman. It takes courage, tons of it, to admit something like that so let’s all applaud him.

Now dear Dr Mizzi, can you take your own supremo aside, your dear Prime Minister, and advise him to do what you did. Tell him to admit he doesn’t know much about citizenship-sales. That if all the MEPS—except for a few far-right and anti-EU members—have screamed out to him in no uncertain terms that the scheme is wrong, then he should do what you did and listen. That if all the world press is aghast and thinks us bankrupt, now, not later is the time to stop this shambles.

We might lose out on hard cash but in the process we might also win a scrap of respect back.

Go on Dr Mizzi—speak energetically to the Prime Minister and get him to see the light.
