Christmas back in times of old when loons ruled and we were falling headlong into third worlds was a time for shocks. When I was young and socialists were in power we used to get a few bombshells every Christmas. It was a sort of celebration of Scrooge—all fun was humbug and so our gifts back then were wrapped not in tinsel or foil but in barbed wire and other tough stuff.

I know it’s the time to rejoice so we should not think of past woes. And I know I also exaggerate a bit. The barbed wire is all hyperbole which I am always guilty of adding in my verbose stuff. But the barbs—those constant barbs against us the suffering mortals living on this rock—were constant and real.

Today we have the pinkish or even, to some degree, bluish party back in the reins of power. Back with a bang they are what with all the applause and stuff they have managed to garner away from our shores.

But all this lunacy wanes—even had it been wrapped in shards of cut glass—into insignificance compared to another sort of party I am now referring to. Yes, as we all suffering Maltese people now know, a party was held in a court-room and goings-on most injudicious were perpetrated by a member of the judiciary.

Instead of resigning for his despicable act in ordering the arrest of a member of the media, this magistrate has defied everyone and ridiculed whoever speaks ill of what went on as insignificant.

What arrogance. What court buffoonery. What an affront to sanity and probity in our land. The man is in a position of power—which he needs to be stripped of instantly.

The rest of the lunacy needs to be examined as well.

The man who sits in judgement of others was on the verge of being impeached a good few years ago. Agreement between the parties was needed for a two-thirds majority in parliament to pass that impeachment motion. But this was not to be—and the man now accused by both parties remained a magistrate. Shame on those people who saved him to fight and turn our courts into a place of ridicule—and also shame on whoever had appointed him. So all the political parties should remain united in getting rid of him but should also hang their heads in shame.

But there is more. I tried—I tried hard enough—to follow the Police Commissioner’s reasoning about why in reality, and on a purely technical issue, the Times reporter was not arrested and other strange things the commissioner said. Is this important? He was hauled by the police to a police station and held for three hours. I’m sure he did not relish the experience and was not there to enjoy himself.

This abuse must stop. When Norman Vella took—or rather never even took—that photo the police arrested him for four hours. That was despicable but nobody—or hardly anybody—spoke up. Thank God this time everyone—including the Bishop Auxiliary—has shown his disapproval.

The loons need to have their reign curtailed. Immediately. Before we turn our land into one judged by clowns.
