The Nationalist Party said this evening that it backed legislation on civil unions, but it would move amendments to the Bill proposed by the government.

In a brief statement after a meeting of its parliamentary group, the party said that in line with its electoral programme, it was in favour of civil unions between people of the same sex and it was prepared to vote in favour of such a law.

Referring to the Bill presented by the government, which will put civil unions on a par with marriage and make the Marriage law applicable to civil unions, the PN said it would be moving amendments so that the Marriage Act would not apply to Civil unions, because the two were different.

It said it would seek consensus on its proposals.
