Malta’s history through work, from Megalithic times to the French era to the uprising against the British in 1919, to the most recent acquisition of independence and freedom, are being brought to life in a musical this weekend.

Ħidmietna, which brings together the best of Maltese talent, marks the 70th anniversary of the General Workers’ Union. Among the 28 singers are Mark Tonna, Glenn Vella, Dominic Cini, J. Anvil and Julie Pomorski, who join forces with the 100-strong cast.

The main character of the musical, the score for which was composed by Elton Zarb, remains Reggie Miller, who not only played a crucial role in the founding of the union but championed workers’ rights.
