Admittedly, Maths is not my forte, but I honestly do not think that there’s any way in hell that you can somehow make what happened this week add up.

Earlier this year, a study conducted by the European Commission revealed (or rather confirmed), that Malta is essentially booming and busting with law graduates.

There are so many legal heads on the island that from where I’m sitting, it seems that once they graduate we don’t quite know what to do with them.

This little rock which also happens to enjoy one of the lowest crime rates in the world, has 287.3 lawyers per 100,000 inhabitants, when compared to an EU27 average of 160.7

In addition, the ratio of lawyers to full-time professional judges is 30.8, compared to an EU27 average of 16.2.

Now, had this to translate in some sort of super efficient justice system, or perhaps somewhat competitive legal fees, I’d say kudos, be and let be, but all those who have ever had anything to do with our courts can vouch that these ridiculous numbers are not, in any way, and by no stretch of the immagination, leading to efficiency within the system, nor competitive or reasonable legal fees.

Anyone whose ever needed a lawyer knows that in most cases it’s easier to get through to the Pope, and that the bill at the end of each month is enough to leave you skint, breathless and, seething through the teeth.

So this week The University of Malta decided to solve this problem by doing the unthinkable – by lowering the entry requirements to the Bachelor of Laws course!

Now, instead of three Intermediate Matriculation passes at Grade C or above, as from 2014, only one of these passes (English or Maltese if not offered at Advanced Matriculation Level) must be at Grade C or better, whilst the other two passes can be Grade E or better.

Moreover, the Senate also decided to remove with immediate effect the requirement of either Italian or French at Intermediate Matriculation Level.

Why oh why I ask, as the mind boggles away.
