Upper St Elmo is to be used as a Military Museum, it was announced this morning.

The museum is being set up by Heritage Malta and Grand Harbour Regeneration Corporation at Upper Fort St Elmo in Valletta.

The War Museum, currently at Lower Fort St Elmo, will be incorporated in the new museum. The project is expected to cost €13.5m of which 85 per cent will be EU funded.

Structural works are expected to be completed in April and the new museum will open in a year's time.

The new museum will trace Malta's military history going back to the knights of St John.

The National War Museum is among Malta's most popular, but is has long run out of space.

Fort St Elmo is itself an example of different phases of military architecture, including different periods of the rule of the Knights of St John and the more recent harbour defence gun emplacements built during the Second World War.

The site was hit by the first bombs to be dropped on Malta in the Second World War and a number of soldiers were killed.
