UPDATED 7.45 p.m. - A hunger strike by foreign prisoners has ended, just over 24 hours after it started.

A spokesman for the Home Affairs Ministry confirmed that the action had ended.

18 prisoners went on hunger strike yesterday but five gave up this morning. The rest ended their strike this evening.

The prisoners were complaining of discrimination compared to Maltese prisoners.

The Ministry of Home Affairs said yesterday that they are also seeking a longer amnesty and an efficient parole system.

Talks with the prisoners started yesterday and are expected to continue.
