Swedish trotter Orcas Bac, driven by Rodney Gatt, won the major event at the Marsa Racetrack on Friday – the Sette Giugno Championship final for Premier Class on a short distance of 2,140m.

Nine horses lined up for the title race. It was Argus Hanover (Charles Camilleri) who made the fastest start, opening a half-length’s lead from Simb Mark (Noel Baldacchino) and Lage (Marco Refalo).

But with a lap to go, Orcas Bac (Rodney Gatt) shot into the lead and ran untroubled until the post. This was Orcas Bac’s second win in Malta and the trotter did it in an impressive average time of 1.14.7” per kilometre.

Nino de Saintho (Cliferty Calleja) was second ahead of Sultan November (Shawn Portelli) and Argus Hanover.

At the end of the race, Racing Club chairman Matthew Brincat presented trophies to Angelo Cassar, owner of the winning horse, and driver Gatt.

The Gold Class race was won by Onyx Lucernais (Jason Cordina) for its second win in a row. Hulot (Jason Vassallo), Skip Dimanche (Charlo Debono) and Nophenio De Lune completed the top-four positions in that order.

However, the other race, apart from the final, that caught most of the attention on Friday evening was the fourth Silver Class race in programme.

This will remain a special event for young driver Anton Cassar and his father Frenċu.

Anton Cassar’s Ogor led all the way and prevailed at the post by less than a length from Orio De Marancourt, driven by Cassar senior. Peasant Gallant (Shawn Portelli) was third ahead of Ouraki du Drochon (Frans Farrugia).

This afternoon’s card at Marsa includes five finals for French trotters. First race starts at 1.30pm.
