A small silent protest was held in Valletta yesterday over the Turkish government's clampdown on protests currently being held in Istanbul and several other cities.

The clashes between Turkish riot police and protesters have left hundreds of people injured.

The unrest was sparked by protests against the government plans to redevelop Istanbul's Taksim Square, long a rallying point for mass demonstrations, but widened into a broad show of defiance against the Islamist-rooted Justice and Development Party (AKP).
