Britons are getting less beach-bound on long-haul trips, according to a travel trends report. Those taking faraway breaks are just as likely to go on twin-centre trips taking in city sightseeing and cultural tours, the report from holiday company Hayes & Jarvis showed.

While New York and Las Vegas are the bestselling long-haul destinations this year, the fastest-growing holiday spot is Vietnam, followed by Brazil, Kenya and Tanzania.

Vietnam bookings are up 98 per cent, while Kenya sales have been boosted by BBC TV’s Africa programme, with safari bookings a massive 286 per cent up on last year.

Mauritius sales are 11 per cent up but Maldives bookings have dipped 35 per cent, mainly due to poor exchange rates.

In the Caribbean, sales to Tobago and the Dominican Republic are up but bookings to Barbados and Antigua are more than 50 per cent down.

Hayes & Jarvis commercial head Sean Dowd said: “While off-the-peg beach packages are still popular – especially four- and five-star all-inclusive ones – there is no doubting the steady decline in demand for traditional fly-and-flop beach holidays.

“In sharp contrast, our multi-centre trip bookings have doubled over the past two years because growing numbers of people are keen to see more of what a country – or a region of the world – has to offer when they travel further afield.”
