The Aegon British Tour provides a circuit of tournaments in the UK designed to complement the international calendar and give upcoming players an ideal opportunity to gain experience in their quest to become professional players.

Bernard Cassar Torreggiani, currently studying in the UK and conducting his training at Culford School and also at the Cambridge High Performance centre, was recently accepted into the men’s singles tournament in Sutton.

In the pre-qualifying rounds (a draw of 64 players) he beat Alex Woolmington (rating 5.2) 6-1 6-2 and followed that up with another fine win over number 10 seed Samuel Kiladejo (rating 4.2) 6-4 7-5.

The two wins placed Cassar Torreggiani into the qualifying draw of 32 players.

He started with another win over Alexander Canter (rating 3.2) 6-4 7-5 and then eliminated seventh seed Elliot Dimmock (rating 3.2) 3-6 6-4 6-3 to book his place in the main draw.

In the first round, Cassar Torreggiani beat Zack Norman (rating 4.1) 6-4 6-1 but in a last 16 match he got ousted by the tournament’s no.6 seed Alexander Gasson (rating 2.2) 6-2 6-4.

Gasson went on to reach the final but lost to Jatin Malik, the no.3 seed of the tournament.

Those participating at the Aegon British Tour gain points from each competition with a leaderboard displaying the totals accumulated from various events along the year.

Similar to the WTA Tour and ATP Tour, the top players on the leaderboard after all tournaments have been played are then invited to the end-of-year Masters.

The tournament in Sutton was played on clay and also served as good preparation for Cassar Tor-reggiani ahead of the Davis Cup commitments for the national team in San Marino later this month.
