To celebrate Earth Day 2013, American and Russian Ambassadors Gina Abercrombie-Winstanley and Boris Marchuk respectively planted trees and flowering bushes at the monument commemorating the Bush-Gorbachev Malta Summit in Birżebbuġa. The historic monument symbolises the end of the Cold War in 1989.

The Ambassadors expressed appreciation for the support provided by Birżebbuġa mayor Joseph Farrugia and members of the council and by Vince Attard of Nature Trust, who provided the trees and plants.

The Ambassadors and staff from both embassies pitched in with planting.
