Fire and Kimberley Downs won the two major races at the Marsa racetrack, yesterday.

The main events on the card were a Premier Class race for trotters on a long distance of 3,140m and a flat event on 2,250m.

Both races formed part of the 15th meeting of the year and the programme included eight races in all.

Fire (Marco Refalo) gained its third win on the trot.

This Swedish ten-year-old trotter upped its pace with 500m to go and won easily, ten lengths ahead of Oran (Carmelo Farrugia) and Poppes Fighter (Charles Camilleri). Ourasi Diams (Emmanuel Fenech) finished fourth.

Danish Mars (Rodney Gatt) had a poor race. This horse changed pace midway through the final straight when it was sprinting neck and neck with Fire whose average time was 1.16.6” per kilometre.

Seven horses lined up in the flat race. Ollie Fliptrik (Sarah Borg) was the fastest out of the gates, opening a length’s lead from Irish debutante Alto Monte, mounted by Sicilian Antonio Pappalardo, and Friarscourt (Ramon Grima).

However, with some 300m to go, Ollie Fliptrik was overtaken by another American horse, Kimberley Downs (Michael Sultana) which gained its first win of the year, a length in front.

Cheeky Jack (Demis Zammit) and Alto Monte also obtained a good placing. It should be noted that in the past months Kimberley Downs was running in France and Belgium, obtaining a good number of positive results in various races.

In the only Gold Class race of the afternoon, French favourite Nobleness Dubrio (Noel Baldacchino) stormed ahead of the field with a lap to go.

Nobleness Dubrio chalked up its second win in a row a half length from Max Galbe (Redent Magro) and Troubadour S (Charles Farrugia). Lucky des Brisants (Christian Xerri) followed behind.

The card also had three Silver Class races, yesterday.

Ouraki du Drochon (Frans Tanti) was first past the post but this French trotter was eventually disqualified. The win was awarded to Obiscus del Fa (Julian Farrugia) ahead of Pile Ou Face (Joe Schembri), Ostheo d’Havetot (Andrew Farrugia) and Milano du Gite (Alex Cortis).

Finland’s Manuel Jet made a strong dash from the outside, 600m to the end of the second Silver race. Driven by Carl Caruana, this 11-year-old trotter went on to record its first win of the season by a length from Nasdaq du Closet (Eugenio Zerafa), Nobel Pasmarick (Noel Baldac-chino) and Quo Vadis Phedo (Charles Camilleri).

In the other Silver race, French mare Que Je T’Aime Rush (Herman McKay) profited from the disqualification of Quipo du Tronquay (Noel Baldacchino) which had crossed the finish line first.

Quartz du Lupin (Jeffrey Said), Lutan Villetot (Eman Attard) and French debutante Queops de Retz (Charles Farrugia) ended respectively in second, third and fourth places.

The next meeting at the racetrack will be held on Sunday.
