Double trap shooters William Chetcuti and Nathan Lee Xuereb failed to shine at yesterday’s ISSF World Cup shoot in the United Arab Emirates as both missed out on a top-six spot.

Xuereb finished 25th after hitting 28, 26, 27, 20 and 29 for a total of 130/150 in the qualifying round.

The more-experienced Chetcuti trailed his younger team-mate as he placed 29th out of 35 competitors. He had a total of 128 (26, 25, 27, 25 and 25).

Briton Peter Wilson, winner of the double trap event at last year’s London Games, claimed the honours after beating China’s Wang Hao 30-28 in the gold medal match.

Italy’s Davide Gasperini claimed bronze after edging fellow country-man Daniele Di Spigno 27-26.

American shooter Walton Eller, who topped the qualifying round with a record-equalling score of 146/150, faded in the barrage, finishing fifth. Germany’s Andreas Loew was sixth.

In Al Ain, Rennie Deguara finished 79th in the trap event earlier in the week with a total of 109 out of 125 clays.
