It’s always the right time to go to Sicily as every season has its particular attraction. That said, spring is a particularly ideal time to visit our neighbouring island. Come spring, streams are flowing and the odd waterfall gives added life to the colourful countryside. The lush green landscape is dotted with thousands of almond trees in full bloom – enhance the experience with a taste of pasta di mandorla delicacies.

In spring, there is only a trickle of tourists as the peak season is a few months down the line. Accommodation is easy to come by whether you’re staying in an agriturismo off the beaten track or a hotel in one of the many quaint towns. There is no need to book in advance – just stop where your fancy takes you. Moreover, prices at this time of the year are rock bottom – this also applies to meals.

Springtime in Sicily offers value for money and is the perfect time to experiment with the delightful Sicilian cuisine. It’s also the best time of the year to take a motoring holiday before the summer sun starts to make life less comfortable. Now is the time to potter around Agrigento – the Valle dei Templi is also looking at its best and its combination of almond flowers and Greek temples is hard to beat. Not far off is the lone magnificent hilltop temple at Segesta and Selinunte, two groups of temples by the sea.

Moving on a little further west is the quaint walled mountain town of Erice, 750 metres above sea level. Erice is a must for anyone visiting this part of Sicily. Arrive in the middle of the afternoon and spend the night there to appreciate it better. There is only one snag with Erice – it’s packed with tourists in the summer, so springtime is the time to visit.

There is another side to Sicily that is best enjoyed in spring – an adventure holiday for the whole family to enjoy the rural atmosphere while quad biking, horse riding, cycling or off roading.
