Heritage Malta has made significant progress in emergency restoration works on Fort St Angelo, particularly around its main gate and the ramp leading to it, the parliamentary secretary for culture, Jose' Herrera, was told during a tour this afternoon.

The agency is making use of €1.5m allocated for emergency works in the 2010 budget and €13.5m allocated by the EU Regional Development Fund to turn the historic fort into a heritage experience.

The work so far has focused on archaeological investigation, the Mepa permits process, removal of modern additions, cleaning and the restoration of the main gate and the ramp.

The focus now is on rebuilding a roof which used to exist behind the main gate.

Work is also in hand on the rebuilding of de Guiral sally port, work which a tender will be awarded shortly.
