The Government yesterday appointed former Nationalist MP Franco Debono Commissioner of Laws.

The Office of the Commissioner of Laws was set up in terms of the 1980 Revisions of Statutory Laws Act. Its role is to review legislation to ensure better and correct legislation.

A statement from the Office of the Prime Minister said Dr Debono would be responsible for co-ordinating the constitutional convention that is to be set up during this legislature. His first task will be to formulate the terms of reference for the convention.

In the last Parliament, Dr Debono was a constant thorn in the side of the then Nationalist Government. He voted against the 2013 Budget, which precipitated this month’s election.
