The Carnival defile' in Valletta was cancelled this afternoon because of bad weather.

Participants said the decision had been taken mostly because of the strong gusts of wind the floats were likely to encounter as their were driven up Glormu Cassar Avenue towards the Auberge de Castille.

Despite the weather, hundreds of people turned up to enjoy the Carnival atmosphere on the Floriana granaries. However as the showers returned Carnival was effectively over for the day.

One British tourist, Bruce Monaghan said: "Thank you to the wonderful Maltese people who have worked so hard to make the carnival possible. The enthusiasm maintained during such awful weather is a credit to them all."
