Two young martial artists from the Malta Karate Federation – Rebecca Spiteri and Michela Rapa – have just returned from Italy where they took part in the Open Campania Internazionale di Karate tourna-ment in Monterusciello.

The Campania Internazionale is a high level competition open to 13-year-olds upwards. In Italy, the event is one of four major tournaments from which local martial artists are selected for European and world championships.

In this year’s event, over 1,150 athletes took part.

Competing in ‘Esordiente A’, Spiteri placed a creditable second and Rapa fifth.

Sensei Michelle Vella, who accompanied both girls in Italy, said:

“This is one of the most prestigious results ever obtained by our young members in this particular tournament.

“The results obtained show the high level of competition of our athletes as well as the determination and will to succeed shown by both Rebecca and Michela despite the strong opposition.”
