The Richmond Foundation has completed the refurbishment of a villa in Tarxien which is currently housing 10 people with mental health problems.

The refurbishment was partly funded by the government through a €10,000 donation from the Good Causes Fund.

The fund generates its income through a percentage contributed from the amount of tax payable from gaming activity and unclaimed prizes.

Finance Minister Tonio Fenech toured the project this morning where he saw the extensive refurbishment on the house which the foundation purchased through a bank loan. It used the Good Causes Fund money to refurbish the place and create sleeping quarters for the residents.

Residents are provided with a 24-hour carer but lead a mostly independent life.

CEO Doris Gauci said this was the third house the foundation had for people with mental problems to live in the community. It also has 24 apartments with about 50 tenants living in the community.

Mr Fenech said that the fund has helped more than 500 organisations this year. Organisations like Richmond were instrumental for the non-institutionalisation of people with mental health problems.
