A massive sinkhole in the U.S. state of Ohio has demolished part of a state highway and is dangerously close to nearby houses.

The sinkhole appeared suddenly. It happened so fast witnesses had to dash to stop approaching traffic.

What started as a pond is now the size of four football fields.

The U.S. Transport Department says an asphalt company dredging the area for sand may have eroded enough of the land to cause the collapse.

The damage may not be permanently repaired until well into next year.
