Work is well under way on a 4km tunnel from Maghtab to Kappara distribution centre, which will host the cable linking Malta's power network with that of Sicily.

Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi this morning visited the project, which is being handled by Polidano Brothers.

Some 650 metres of the tunnel have so far been dug. On a good day, depending on the sort of rock found, some 25 metres are dug, Dr Gonzi was told.

During his visit, Dr Gonzi attended Mass on site to mark the feast of St Barbara, patron saint of miners.

The tunnel is expected to be completed within a year.
