New graduates were yesterday encouraged to continue studying even while raising their own families. Speaking during the first graduation ceremony held at the Sir Temi Zammit Hall in Msida, Helen Grech, from the Faculty of Health Sciences, urged graduates to engage in lifelong learning.

Continuing education and professional development were achievable and parental leave could be a “golden opportunity” to further one’s studies.

“I am aware that a number of parents who invested in 20 years of education feel lost when their life suddenly takes a turn to parenthood. But, given the available resources, committed childcare should not restrict you from going on with your studies,” Prof. Grech said.

Her speech kicked off a week of graduation ceremonies at the University, which will draw to an end on December 6.

This year saw 3,224 graduates, two thirds of whom read for an undergraduate degree.

More than 1,907 of all graduates were women.

As graduates leave their educational shelter they needed to make sure they achieved cultural and global competence to become responsible citizens, Prof. Grech continued.

Communication, care, collaboration, creativity, critical thinking and empathy were core values to function effectively and served those around us at a time when individualism prevailed.

These skills made a great leader, she said, adding that she considered Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela, Winston Churchill, Fr Peter Serracino Inglott and John Rizzo Naudi to have been endowed with effective cultural and global competences.

“We need to consider these great people as models and try to follow their lead.”

Speaking during the same ceremony, Kurt Borg told fellow undergraduates that yesterday’s celebration was not “the end” but “the beginning”. He encouraged them to be more creative and less static, to be innovative and not let themselves be weighed down by outdated burdens.

Sandro Rizzo also urged the graduates “to live” their experiences at the University.
