SmartCity Malta was a hub of activity on Sunday with over 100 runners present for the first SmartCity Malta 8km road race hosted by St Patrick’s AC.

The race, flagged off by Suleiman Al Riyami, Country Director at SmartCity Malta, proceeded to Bighi, Kalkara, Xgħajra and back to gathering point.

The winners on the day were Jonathan Balzan and Carmen Hili who finished the race in 26:44 and 30:30 respectively.

Both runners are St Patrick’s AC members.

Mario Grech and Andrew Grech were second and third home in the men’s category while Joelle Cortis and Angele Sammut followed Hili at the finish line in the women’s race.

In the event for juniors, a 1.5km loop in the SmartCity Malta surroundings, the first runners in were Luke Zammit and Laura Sammut.

Trophies were presented by Suleiman Al Riyami.

Commemorative medals and other freebies, sponsored by Nestle Malta, Twistees and Raysun, were distributed to each participant.

Hilly and Ron Hill were also among the main sponsors of the race.

Given the scenic circuit, the feedback received was very positive with most of the participants saying they were expecting the race to be part of an annual calendar of events at SmartCity Malta, the organisers said in a statement.
