The Commonwealth Shooting Federation European Division Championships in Jersey proved to be a happy hunting ground for Malta Shooting Sport Federation (MSSF) members yesterday as they landed two silver medals in different competitions.

First, it was Marianna Kisvardai who finished second in the 10m air-rifle event to become the first MSSF shooter to finish on the podium in the women’s category in the championships.

Her feat was followed up by Clive Farrugia and Darren Vella who later in the afternoon combined their talents in the men’s skeet pairs to finish second behind the gold medallists from England.

Kisvardai, of Hungarian origins, fired consistent high scores this year and in Jersey she managed another remarkable tally of 381 out of a possible 400 to qualify for the finals where she targeted an almost perfect result of 99.6 points.

Alison Vella, another shooter from the MSSF fold, was classified fifth overall after a 356 score in qualifying and 90.0 in the finals.

Vella and Farrugia managed 174 hits from a possible 200 with the winners taking the gold medal with a score of 177.

The Welsh marksmen were third on 170 points.

In individual skeet, Farrugia had to settle for fourth place with 133 points and Vella sixth with 127. The gold medal went to England’s Mac Gilligan who hit 148 clays.

The Commonwealth shooting championships for European countries were first held in Scotland in 1974.

This latest edition is the 31st in the series with competition staged mainly in the United Kingdom and the British Isles.

Meanwhile, George Cassar was the overall winner yesterday of the Vivendo Group Trap Challenge Cup at the ranges in Bidnija.

The competition was on 125 clays and Cassar qualified with the best result of 113 before hitting another 18 clays in the barrage for an overall 131 score.
