Tenor Joseph Calleja is to be awarded an honorary degree by the University of Malta in recognition of his achievement as one of the world’s leading opera singers and Malta’s cultural ambassador in the music world.

The University said its council yesterday approved the senate’s recommendation to award Mr Calleja the degree of Doctor of Literature (D.Litt.) Honoris Causa.

The proposal was first made by the University’s Honoris Causa Committee and was unanimously approved.

The degree ceremony will be held at the Jesuits’ Church in Valletta on November 2.

Mr Calleja was named Gramophone Artist of the Year 2012 during a gala ceremony at London’s Dorchester Hotel last night.
