2011 saw the creation of a prominent international chess tournament on our shores – the Malta International Open.

Last year, the event attracted 124 players from 22 countries – including players from as far as the US, Hong Kong, Mongolia and Venezuela. Among the guests were seven Grandmasters – the highest rank achievable in chess.

Thirteen International Masters were also present.

The tournament took place at the Topaz Hotel in Buġibba which proved to be an ideal venue and provided a pleasant stay for the foreign contingent.

All this was made possible thanks to the commitment and support of the Malta Tourism Authority and Cheverny Investments Ltd who have maintained their backing, making sure that the tournament establishes itself on the European chess calendar.

The Topaz Hotel will again open its doors to players from over 20 countries for the tournament, to be played between November 18 and 24.

This time there will be nine Grandmasters, six International Masters and three woman Grandmasters who have already registered with the number of entrants already exceeding the 100-player mark.

The participation numbers augur well and there is the possibility that the 2012 Open will beat last year’s entry record and nationalities for a private tournament here.

As last year, the event is recognised and supported by the Malta Chess Federation.
