Updated - Adds report by Assistant Police Commissioner Michael Cassar -
Former Police Commissioner George Grech has denied having had any contact with Richard Cachia Caruana about an alleged drugs party on board a yacht or that he had, knowingly or unknowingly, sent the police to investigate the wrong yacht.
Mr Grech was reacting to comments made last week on One TV by Labour MP Joe Mizzi. The allegations have also been used by Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando in his case against Mr Cachia Caruana.
Mr Mizzi claimed that the case took place in 1996 and involved friends of Mr Cachia Caruana, but the police were sent to the wrong yacht.
Mr Grech who was commissioner in 1996, said that for as long as he was commissioner he always correctly passed on all information he received for investigation. This also applied for the case referred to by Mr Mizzi.
It was therefore not true that there had been some mistake, intentional or otherwise by him as commissioner, with a view to hinder investigations.
Mr Grech also declared that he had no communication with Mr Cachia Caruana.
He reserved his right to take legal action.
Mr Cachia Caruana has already instituted civil libel proceedings against Mr Mizzi and also asked the police to institute criminal proceedings.
REPORT BY ASSISTANT COMMISSIONER CASSAR
The Government in the evening also published a report by Assistant Police Commissioner Michael Cassar, head of the vice-squad about how the police had received information about the party and conducted a search, finding nothing.
