Two important horse racing meetings will be held at Marsa today and next Sunday.

The highlight of today’s pro-gramme, starting at 2.30 p.m., is the Sette Giugno Cup, reserved for Premier Class trotters.

The 12-horse line-up for the final includes the popular Livi Cantona, Wiss Night Hawk, Zilver Boko and Nabab du Chatelet.

Flat racing thoroughbreds will take centre-stage on Sunday with the staging of the MRC Tote Mediterranean Derby final on a distance of 1,750m.

This race is the oldest horse racing competition in Malta and one of the oldest sports events on the islands, dating back to 1889.

Seven horses from France, Great Britain, Ireland, Sweden and the US will run this year’s final.

These are last year’s Derby winner Buttermilk, 2011 Coronation Cup winner Fyelehk, Darielli and Sleepwalking, both race winners this year, newcomer Little Anthony, Capital Hill and Etoile du Pic.

Also on Sunday, Malta’s U-25 champion driver Rodney Gatt will take part in the next leg of the Mediterranean Horse Racing Union (MHRU) championship at the Beograd racetrack in Serbia.

After the opening stages, Malta are top of the standings with 21 points but Slovenia are a close second and Italy third.

Gatt, 23, is a promising driver who already has more than 100 race wins under his belt.
