Tomorrow is February 29 and it marks a rare day dedicated to rare diseases.

Hundreds of organisations from 40 countries, including the Malta Health Network, are coming together to mark Rare Disease Day.

A disease or disorder is defined as rare in Europe when it affects fewer than one in 2,000 people, while in the US, it is when it affects fewer than 200,000 Americans at any given time.

In the EU, some 30 million people are affected by one of the existing 6,000 to 8,000 rare diseases.
