Last weekend, Malta’s leading airgun shooters took part in the first of three local competitions that will enable them to measure their results against those of leading British shooters contesting the NSRA/Eley Postal competition.

Postal shooting competitions are very popular in the UK as shooters can test themselves against competitors from other parts of Britain and elsewhere without the need to travel.

The best of three scores are sent by the club secretaries to the UK’s national shooting body, i.e. the National Smallbore Rifle Association, for eventual classification.

After the first phase, the top shooters qualify for the second round after which the best-placed participants in the various classes will proceed to the finals at the UK National Shooting Ranges in Bisley in October next year.

All male and female shooters had to target 40 shots in one hour and 15 minutes.

In the air pistol category, Eleanor Bezzina won this event in style, registering a best score of 375/400 points.

Another excellent result was achieved by Stephen Vassallo who shot a personal best of 360 points to claim second place. Ray Cacciattolo also did well to finish third with 354/400 points. Josette Calleja was fourth on 330 points, Martin Grech fifth on 307 and Mario Mallia Milanes sixth with 260.

In the air rifle event, Romeo Zuber was the winner of the mixed competition with 348/400 points. He was followed by newcomer Alison Bezzina who totalled 325 points.

The next competition, valid for the NSRA/Eley postal competition, will be held at the Bidnija Indoor Airgun Range on December 17.
