A Socata Trinidad light aircraft  has ditched in the sea off Filfla. The incident happened at about 11.15 a.m., five miles to the est of Malta International Airport.

Transport Malta said this afternoon that following communication by the pilot on the emergency frequency, a nearby aircraft was asked to assist in locating the pilot who eventually was found safe in the aircraft emergency dinghy.

The pilot was then picked up by an AFM helicopter and taken to hospital for further examination.

Officials from Transport Malta’s Civil Aviation Directorate are following the matter closely and are in constant contact with the AFM. The AFM are co-ordinating the clean-up operation of the aircraft debris floating in the sea.

The incident is currently being investigated by the Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation (BAAI), a committee specifically setup within the Ministry for Infrastructure Transport and Communications responsible for such investigation.

A magisterial inquiry has also been launched.
