Hundreds of motorists were stuck in long traffic jams on the roads to Valletta this morning at St Anne Street was closed for almost 30 minutes for a War Memorial wreath laying ceremony by the Slovak President, Ivan Gasparovic.

Traffic jams stretched to Msida and Hamrun as the major artery was closed at shortly after 11 a.m.

The President, who is accompanied by his wife, arrived in Malta yesterday afternoon and was greeted at the airport by Health Minister Joseph Cassar.

President George Abela formally welcomed him during a parade in St George's Square, Valletta, this morning.

The two Presidents inspected an AFM Guard of Honour outside the Palace before holding talks.

Mr Gastarovic is later today due to hold talks with Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and Opposition leader Joseph Muscat.

The talks are expected to focus on bilateral relations, EU affairs and the situation in Libya.
