Passenger movements at Malta International Airport in August totalled 427,575, down by just 349 from last year's August record, MIA said today.

During the same month, seat capacity reached 499,086, a decrease of 7%, which is equivalent to 37,295 seats.

In August, aircraft movements were down by 9.5% over the corresponding period last year, whilst the average seat load factor increased by 5.9 percentage points to reach 85.7% - up from the 79.8% registered in August 2010.

The maximum take-off weight (MTOW) was 8.8% less than that registered in August last year, whilst cargo and mail was 10% lower than that recorded during the same month in 2010.

Arrivals from MIA's top source market, the United Kingdom, registered an increase of 1% during August with Germany experiencing an increase of 22.8% and Spain growing at a slower rate of 2.7%. Arrivals from Italy and France registered a decrease of 12.3% and 6.7% respectively.

January – August 2011

The results for the first eight months of the year, in terms of passenger movements, show an increase of 8.5% when compared to the same period last year, totalling 2,399,413 passenger movements with relatively the same amount of aircraft movements. The average seat load factor improved by 4.2 percentage points reaching 75% for the period January to August 2011.
