Valletta FC are expected to sign Italian midfielder Filippo Savi on a one-year loan deal from Serie A side Parma.

Savi arrived in Malta yesterday to begin training with the Citizens who are currently gearing up for their Super Cup encounter with rivals Floriana on Tuesday.

Jesmond Zerafa, the Valletta coach, is keen to have a closer look at Savi before deciding whether to retain him but the club believe that the 24-year-old midfielder will live up to expectations.

Savi has represented Italy at youth level but a series of injuries derailed his progress.

Although still on the books of Parma, Savi has spent most of his senior career on loan with lower-division clubs, including Monza, Arezzo and Spal. Earlier this year, he had a short spell with Serie C2 Crociati Noceto who went bank-rupt at the end of the season.

The Citizens already have five foreigners in their ranks – Brazi-lians Denni, Ramon and William Barbosa, who has an Italian pass-port, Nigerian forward Alfred Effiong and winger Ousseni Zongo, from Burkina Faso.
