Health Minister Joseph Cassar met cyclists in the Betfair LifeCycle challenge who, on Friday, leave for a 2,000-kilometre run from Prague to Sarajevo to raise money for the hospital’s renal unit.

Dr Cassar was briefed on this year’s trip, including the 17-week training programme and the projects for which the money was being raised.

Over the years, €1 million were raised by LifeCycle for the unit.

The cyclists are preparing for the gruelling challenge by riding for eight hours a day. For the first time, they will be equipped with GPS sets donated by Garmin, which will make it considerably easier to follow the route.

Donation lines are already open. SMS donations can be made by texting 5061 7370 to donate €2.33; 5061 8920 for €6.99; and 5061 9229 to give €11.65. For landline donations call 5160 2020 to give €10; 5170 2005 for €15 and 5180 2006 for €25.
