This site, located in the area of Bidnija, between Wied ta’ l-Arkata and Ta’ Sparati, houses what are probably the oldest trees in the Maltese islands, which are reputedly over 2,000 years old. These trees are native olive trees (żebbuġ) of the Bitni variety (hence the name Bidnija) and are also declared as national monuments.

The trees have been protected since 1933, when they were declared as trees having an Antiquarian Importance. The site is also declared a Nature Reserve and is scheduled as an Area of Ecological Importance and Site of Scientific.

Mepa declared this site as a Tree Protected Area on May 24, in accordance with the provisions of the Trees and Woodlands Protection Regulations (2011) as per Government Notice number 473/11.
