Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Team Malta (BJJT) recently hosted Rogerio Olegario, a third Degree Black Belt, for a week-long seminar.

The attendance figures increased significantly compared to previous years as participants from other disciplines, including Aiki-Jitsu, judo, wrestling and Wing Tsun, took part in the seminar.

The sessions covered several areas whereby students were challenged to adopt specific techniques in different situations. The skills displayed by Master Olegario encompassed a wide spectrum of both simple, yet efficient moves, to accommodate those new to the sport and others with more experience.

At the end of each session, participants had the opportunity to spar against a resisting opponent and put into practice the tactics they had just learnt.

Also, during the seminar, Master Olegario promoted some of the BJJT’s top performers to Blue Belt. They included Joseph Abela, Jozua Curmi, Tyrone Camilleri and Michelle Zarb.

Keith Darmanin was elevated to Purple Belt in recognition of his contribution to the sport, not only as a competitor but also as chief instructor of the Maltese team and his commitment to the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Darmanin is an inspiration for his team, leading them to medal-winning performances in international competitions including the European Jiu-Jitsu Championships and the Abu Dhabi World Trials.

Darmanin became the first Maltese martial artist to gain promotion to Purple Belt.
