It is the duty of the Public Health Department to ensure that a condition imposed on the Freeport by Mepa for dredging works in the bay to be observed, the planning authority said.

Birzebbuga residents last Saturday expressed concern at dredging works by the freeport, which, according to the permit given could not be carried out in the bathing season.

They said that only a couple of weeks ago, boat owners who berthed in bay were asked by Transport Malta to remove their boats by June 10 due to dredging works.

In a letter to the mayor, Mepa said that the condition that works should not be carried out in the bathing season was imposed by the Public Health Department and it was its duty to ensure it was adhered to.

Mepa said it had not received any application for the condition to be changed.
