Maltese judokas provided a fitting finale to Team Malta's first full day of competition at the Small Nations Games today as Jeremy Saywell and Brent Law won silver while Joanne Camilleri took bronze.

However, there was no fairytale for top judoka Marcon Bezzina who suffered a serious elbow injury in her first bout of the -63kg category and will now be forced to sit out of the team's competitions.

Young Saywell made an impressive first showing in the GSSE competition when he reached the final of the 66kg category after beating Andorra's Daniel Garcia Gonzalez in the semi-finals.

However, his quest of winning gold fell just short after a hard-fought defeat to Cypriot judoka Andreas Krassas. Cedric Bessi, of Monaco, and Massimiliano Urbinati, of San Marino took the bronze medal.

In the 60kg category, Law also put up an impressive showing as he qualified for the gold medal final against Monaco's Yann Sicardi. However, the Monegasque judoka just managed to beat the Maltese to win the event.

Camilleri was the other medal winner for Malta in judo when she placed third in the 57kg category. The gold medal in the event was won by Manon Durbach, of Luxembourg, while Sofia Annag, of Monaco took the silver medal.
