I refer to the letter Historical Archway On Point Of Collapse by Edward Said (April 6) on behalf of Sliema Heritage Society.

The Gżira local council would like to take the opportunity to thank this society for exposing the importance of this monument, as unfortunately all the council’s past restoration attempts have been turned down.

Notwithstanding the fact that this arch is privately owned, throughout past and even the current legislation, the council made several attempts to seek government assistance for restoration, with the last request being made last year under one of the government schemes helping local councils to restore small historical places.

Regretfully, our application was not accepted.

Needless to say, the council will continue to pursue its intentions, since it strongly believes that this monument should be preserved.

For correctness’ sake, Fawwara Gate, its original name, has always been known as Bieb il-Gżira.
