Maltese shooters Jeffrey Tonna and Rennie Deguara yesterday competed in the trap event at the 2011 ISSF World Cup in Beijing.

Tonna placed 39th overall with a score of 113 (23, 22, 22, 22, 24) out of 125 points while Deguara hit 106 points (21, 17, 23, 22, 23) to finish 69th.

Croatia’s Giovanni Cernogoraz captured the gold medal with a total of 145 points (121+24), one ahead of Russia’s 2004 Olympic champion Alexy Alipov (123+21).

Jiri Gach, of the Czech Republic, claimed the bronze medal with a score of 143 points (120+23). Cernogoraz, who trailed Alipov by two points going into the final barrage, and Gach secured the two Olympic quotas at stake yesterday. The other qualifiers for the final barrage were Marian Kovacocy, of Slovakia, (137), Czech Jiri Liptak (136) and Russia’s Igor Chebanov (133).

According to the ISSF results, Maltese shooter Calidonio Vella, who is based in the UK, was among the entries for the trap competition. Vella only shot the first three rounds, recording scores of 17, 20 and 15.

Last weekend, William Chetcuti gave Maltese sport a terrific boost after winning the gold medal in the double trap at the third leg of this year’s ISSF World Cup. Chetcuti’s success in Beijing also earned him a qualifying ticket for the 2012 London Olympics.
