Maltese competitors at ISSF World Cup

A group of shooters from the Malta Shooting Sport Federation (MSSF) will be among 350 competitors from 54 countries taking part in the fourth leg of the ISSF World Cup 2011, in Beijing, over the next few days.

William Chetcuti will be contesting the Double Trap tomorrow morning. He will shoot three rounds of 50 clays each with the top six to qualify for a barrage final of another 50 clays.

In China, Chetcuti is being assisted by federation coach Jimmy Bugeja.

The men’s Trap event on Wednesday sees the participation of MSSF shooters Jeff Tonna, Rennie Deguara and Donald Vella.

In Beijing, 10 Olympic quota places will be at stake. Shooting competitions started earlier this week and the last events are scheduled for next Thursday.

The first medal match, the Skeet women final, was won by home shooter Ning Wei with a record-equalling score of 99 hits from a possible 100.

Wei had three rounds of 25, including the one in the final, to outscore nearest rivals Kimberly Rhode (96), of the United States, and Germany’s Christine Wenzel (94).

Antonakis Andreou, of Cyprus, won the men’s Skeet title yesterday. He finished on 147 points, just one clay ahead of Nikolaos Mavrommatis (Greece). Denmark’s Jesper Hansen won a three-way play-off for the bronze after a tied score of 145 points.
