The Birkirkara FC Youth Nursery, in conjunction with the Malta Tourism Authority, Kunsill Malti għall-Isport and Sports Park Malta, have just hosted the 2011 Eurosport International Youth Festival at the Infetti Training Grounds.

The tournament, in memory of former club officials Alfred Borg and Mario Borg, was open for boys born in 2000 and enriched with the participation of Italian teams from Atalanta, who are twinned with the Stripes, and Triestina.

Over 130 boys took part and 24 matches were played during the weekend.

Besides Birkirkara, the other four local nurseries involved in the festival were Ħamrun Spartans, Hibernians, Pieta Hotspurs and San Ġwann.

Also, a campaign ‘Progetto Neonati Atalantini’ was launched by the Atalanta delegates.

The project, originally founded in Bergamo by the Serie B club, sees that all newborns at hospitals within the city is given an Atalanta shirt.

Dejan Lagana, Kailey Ancilleri and Loren Micallef were the first three babies in Malta to get the blue and black strip of ‘La Dea’.

Two weeks ago, a group of Bir-kirkara nursery players travelled to Bergamo where they participated in two tournaments and indulged in other football-related experiences.

The team, composed of U-13 and U-14 players, had their first commitments at Ponte San Pietro in a triangular tournament against US Giemme and AC Pontisola.

Birkirkara managed a com-fortable 3-0 win over Giemme to book their place in the final against Pontisola. The match ended 2-2, a result that saw the Maltese team prevailing on better goals.

Claudio Fasola presented the trophy to Birkirkara FC nursery chairman Henry Bray and congratulated the team and the staff for their achievement.

The organisers explained that Birkirkara’s win was no mean feat as the Pontisola youth nursery was among the best in the Bergamo region.

In another tournament at Cologno al Serio, Birkirkara played against Colognese and Atalanta.

Birkirkara played two consecutive matches, starting off with a 1-0 win against Colognese.

The young Stripes were then beaten 3-0 by the strong Atalanta team who trounced Colognese 7-1 in the final.

During their time in Italy, the Birkirkara nursery group also had the opportunity to visit the Stadio Sinigaglia, home of Como Calcio, and Zingonia, Atalanta’s training grounds.

They also attended the Serie B championship match between Atalanta and Triestina which the hosts won 4-0.
