Last weekend, the Malta Air Rifle and Pistol Shooting Club, under the auspices of the Malta Shooting Sport Federation (MSSF) organised the second GSSE selection shoot in both air rifle and air pistol at the indoor airgun ranges in Bidnija.

For the umpteenth time, Eleanor Bezzina stole the limelight as she produced an unrivalled score of 371/400 to reach the GSSE Minimum Qualifying Standard in the ladies’ event. Bezzina had a total score of 560/600 in the overall mixed event to secure the gold medal.

Ray Cacciattolo won silver after recording 544/600 while bronze went to newcomer Emmanuel Grech who gained his first podium placing with 507/600.

Martin Grech was fourth on 502 points ahead of Josette Calleja who finished on 498 (331/400 in the ladies event).

There was also an encouraging entry for the air rifle competition. William Vella highlighted his consistency after topping the event with a GSSE MQS score of 574 out of 600 points.

Lawrence Darmanin had to settle for second place on 548/600 while Romeo Zuber also achieved his first podium placing after claiming the bronze medal with a personal best of 519/600.

Charlò Chircop, who was making a comeback to the sport after a long absence, was fourth with 510/600 while Michael Xuereb placed fifth on 496 points.

All shooters then contested the final where another 10 shots were fired. The scores registered in the final were added to those obtained in the qualification rounds but the top positions were unchanged.

Mark Cutajar, the MOC Director of Sport who was present at the airgun ranges to monitor the participants’ performances, presented the medals to the winners.

The competitions were judged by Gino Galea. He was assisted by John Galea.
