Another ferry, frigate arrive with more workers

A second ferry carrying 1,200 workers has docked in Grand Harbour, the second major arrival today as the evacuation of workers from Libya continues to gain momentum.

The British frigate Cumberland has also returned from its second evacuation mission in Benghazi, carrying more than 200 workers, including some Maltese.

The ferry MV Ionian Spirit arrived from the town of Misurata, which fell to anti-Gaddafi protesters last week after a bloody battle. Many of the workers on board are Chinese.

Another ferry, the Knossos Palace arrived in the early hours of this morning, also carrying hundreds of workers.

Air Malta this morning again cancelled its scheduled Tripoli flight, because of security considerations. A Libyan Arab Airlines flight is still scheduled.

However military flights from Tripoli airport are continuing , and there were seven C-130 Hercules transport aircraft on the tarmac at MIA at one time.

A large number of civilian aircraft are also arriving to ferry the workers brought to Malta on ships.
