Todor Raykov’s stint as technical director of Premier League club Floriana came to a quick end yesterday when he got the sack following a series of poor results that saw the Greens slipping behind in the race for the championship.

The committee deemed it fit to call an urgent meeting yesterday morning during which the current situation was discussed. Focus was mainly on the team’s pathetic showing against Marsaxlokk on Saturday. The Southerners comfortably won 4-0 as Raykov’s team conceded a fourth successive defeat in the league.

Floriana FC president Johann Said told The Times that Raykov’s contract was terminated with immediate effect. He added that the club had also parted with Portuguese winger Marcelo Guerrero Fernandes and Kiril Dzhorov, the Bulgarian midfielder.

“The team’s showing against Marsaxlokk was poor, to say the least,” Said lamented.

“The committee felt that there was no other option but to take certain decisions for the good of the club. Raykov had to go and Fernandes and Dzhorov were released.

“That performance on Saturday was unacceptable and we couldn’t comprehend how a team that had won four matches in a row suddenly loses form and concedes as many defeats in the next four.”

Raykov, a former player for Birkirkara in his playing career, was engaged in summer with the hopes that Floriana start challenging for the major honours after several years in the doldrums.

Before Raykov’s arrival, Floriana were coached by Zoran Popovic.

During the pre-season the Greens had also hired Michael Woods as first-team coach.

Woods, a former Malta defender, was temporarily handed the reins of the team yesterday.

Meanwhile, the Floriana FC president said the committee will be meeting the players this even-ing, hinting more drastic action could be taken that may possibly lead to some other players losing their place in the squad.

“We mean serious business and if there’s someone in the team or outside who is thinking that we cannot deal with the situation and take adequate measures to get us back on track, they’re grossly mistaken,” Said warned.

“I’m not ruling out that disciplinary action will be taken and that one or two players could be dropped for our next match.

“Some players have to understand that they have to live up to their own responsibilities.”
