A US judge has commended singer Chris Brown for working hard to complete his probation for last year’s attack on his then-girlfriend, the singer Rihanna.

The R&B star appeared in a Los Angeles courtroom to update the judge overseeing his assault case.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Patricia Schnegg said no-one had worked harder than Brown to complete the terms of his sentence.

She said he has completed roughly 73 of 180 days of community service and is almost finished with his required domestic violence counselling.

Mr Brown is on five years of probation after pleading guilty last year to assaulting Rihanna in a rented sports car after a pre-Grammy Awards party.

Judge Schnegg has ordered Mr Brown to perform physical labour, but is allowing him to work in his home state of Virginia.
