The Malta Shooting Sport Federation achieved another prestigious result on the international scene last weekend after Mark Cassar won the gold medal in the European International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) champion-ships which were held in Brescia, Italy.

The high-level event attracted a healthy participation of 180 target shooters from various countries on the continent including Serbia, Italy, Greece, Germany and Austria.

The Maltese team was composed of Mark Cassar, Patrick Azzopardi and John Cassar.

Mark Cassar left his mark in the Marksman Stock Service Pistol category where he finished top with a score of 305.22.

In the Marksman Custom Defence Pistol class, Patrick Azzopardi was fifth while John Cassar finished sixth in the Sharpshooter Enhanced Service Pistol Senior category.

In a statement, the Malta Shooting Sport Federation noted that considering there are as yet no facilities for regular practice of IDPA sport in Malta, the results are quite remarkable.

“We would like to thank Parliamentary Secretary for Youth and Sport Clyde Puli, who supported the initiative, and the AFM, particularly Commander Brigadier Martin Xuereb. They allowed our shooters to train at the Safi ranges in the build-up to the competition.

“The MSSF feels that suitable ranges for IDPA and similar disciplines could easily be introduced in Malta. This would eventually pave the way for the hosting of similar events in the not too distant future.”
